WHY IS THERE A RICKSHAW IN THE ART GALLERY?

Discovering the Story Behind Cycling Without Age

So you’ve wandered into the art gallery, expecting to find paintings, evocative sculptures, and perhaps a thought-provoking installation, only to encounter—quite unexpectedly—a rickshaw parked in the midst of it all? Its wheels and sturdy shape might seem out of place among the usual displays, but this humble vehicle has an extraordinary story to tell.

So why the rickshaw here?

The rickshaw is part of the Cycling Without Age movement, an international initiative dedicated to combating loneliness and isolation among older adults and those with disabilities by providing them with free bicycle rides in specially designed rickshaws.

What is Cycling Without Age?

Cycling Without Age is a global movement that started in Denmark in 2012. Its visionary founder, Ole Kassow, was inspired by the desire to help older people regain access to their communities—many of whom had lost the ability to cycle due to limited mobility. Ole began by offering free rickshaw rides to residents of local nursing homes, discovering along the way that a simple outing could spark joy, conversation, and a sense of freedom.

The core principles of Cycling Without Age:

  • Generosity: Offering time and companionship without expectation of reward.
  • Slow Cycling: Embracing the journey rather than rushing toward the destination, allowing time to be outside, the sights, and connection.
  • Storytelling: Encouraging riders and volunteers to share memories, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Relationships: Fostering friendship between volunteers (often called ‘pilots’) and the older adults who ride along.
  • Without Age: Breaking down barriers so that life and adventure continue, regardless of age or physical limitations.

Today, Cycling Without Age operates in more than 50 countries, with thousands of chapters and tens of thousands of volunteers. The movement’s distinctive rickshaws are designed to be comfortable, safe, and accessible, allowing older adults and those with disabilities to experience the world outside in a way that might otherwise be impossible.

How does Cycling Without Age work?

At its heart, Cycling Without Age is about giving older adults the right to wind in their hair. Trained volunteers visit nursing homes, retirement communities, or private residences and offer to take residents out on bicycle rides in specially designed rickshaws. These outings are about more than just transportation—they’re about adventure, dignity, and connection.

The typical experience includes:

  • A Warm Welcome: Pilots introduce themselves and get to know the passengers, listening to their stories and preferences.
  • Comfort and Safety: The rickshaws are engineered for stability and comfort, with seatbelts, blankets, and rain covers as needed.
  • A Slow, Scenic Ride: Pilots pedal gently through parks, along waterfronts, or past neighbourhood landmarks, stopping often so passengers can reminisce and engage with their surroundings.
  • Stories Shared: Each ride is an opportunity for conversation. Many pilots record stories or take photos, capturing memories for families and future generations.
  • Return with Smiles: Riders often return with renewed spirits, having enjoyed fresh air, laughter, and meaningful company.

How do you get involved?

Stay tuned for the launch of the Wondai Cycling Without Age chapter to commence in 2026. The initiative will be looking to recruit ‘Pilot’ riders, passengers and future volunteers to assist in the running of this wonderful program.
